materia’s first event of the 2022-2023 academic term took place on September 29. It centered on the filmscreening of Ana Vaz’s short filmApiyemiyekî?, commissioned as a response to the Brazilian military dictatorship (1964-1985). Vaz works with an extraordinary archive from Brazilian educator and indigenous rights activist, Egydio Schwade ―over 3000 drawings collected during a literacy project with the Waimiri-Atroari, a people native to the Brazilian Amazon. Assistant Professor Srdan Keca (Department of Art & Art History at Stanford University) was the invited discussant.
