Workshop on Animal Studies
January 15, 2015 │ 5:15 pm - 7:05 pm

PIGOTT HALL, ROOM 216
FREE AND OPEN TO THE PUBLIC.
Speakers: Ximena Briceño and Monica VanBladel (Stanford, Iberian and Latin American Cultures)
ILAC Lecturer Ximena Briceño and graduate student coordinator Monica VanBladel introduced our quarterly theme of animal studies with reading selections by Jacques Derrida and Donna Haraway. Briceño discussed her research on animality in the work of Peruvian writer Ciro Alegría, within the context of her manuscript on Franciscanism and poverty in the Andes. A key finding of this workshop was that a focus on animality need not be at odds with an object-centric orientation. Our conversation that day revolved around the organic/in-organic divide and its literary emplotment.
